Career

  • Studied medicine, biology, prehistory and early history as well as ethnology in Frankfurt am Main

  • From 1979-1989, in addition to his work in Göttingen, national and international teaching assignments

  • 2010 Retirement as Medical Director of the Prosecution of the Anatomical Institute in Göttingen; continues to work as a professor of anatomy

Research Fields

  • Current teaching assignments and areas of work nationally and internationally on the subject of paleopathology (evolution and history of diseases)

  • Bioarchaeology (Migration Period populations of Central Europe; pre-Columbian populations of North American Southwest and Southeast and Mexico; Ancient Egypt)

  • Bone biomineralization (collagenous and non-collagenous proteins of the extracellular bone matrix)

  • Paleoproteomics and primatology (comparative-morphological and functional-anatomical investigations of the forelimbs of slender monkeys and the paranasal sinuses of great apes)
